Stone slate is a versatile and naturally beautiful rock
that can be used for almost any project. Whether for
commercial application or for use in a home, slate stone
will last for years and keep looking as good as it did
when first installed. It is extremely resistant to tough
weather conditions when used on roofs or outside flooring,
and can be guaranteed to last a life time.
Stone Slate and the Elements
When stone slate is used outdoors, depending on the slate
chosen, it may change slightly in color over the years.
Some of the green colors can fade over time, and other
colors may darken, but this only adds to the subtle beauty
of the stone. The weathering as it is called of some slate
stone is due to the mineral components in the stone.
If you are placing stone slate outside and do not want to
see any change in color, simply look for a stone that is
classified as unfading. The mineral components in this
class of stone ensure the color will stay constant.
Whether using a stone that weathers or not, all stone
slate will be able to withstand the onslaughts of even the
most extreme weather conditions.
Indoors or outdoors, the list of applications that this
stone can be put to is a long one. Stair treads, plaques
and signs, coping, cladding, and fireplaces are just a few
examples. The great structural integrity of stone slate
means it is hard wearing but at the same time allows it to
be split and cut to an array of shapes and sizes.

Cleaning & Maintenance
Brush stone occasionally to remove dust and
"freshen" stone or dust with dusting attachment of vacuum
cleaner. To remove soot, dissolve 4 ounces of yellow
laundry soap in boiling water. After the mixture has
cooled, add 1/2 pound of powdered pumice and 1/2 cup of
household ammonia. Mix thoroughly. Use a stiff brush to
remove as much soot as possible. Then using a paint
brush, paint stones with soap mixture, let remain 1/2
hour and clean with a stiff brush and warm water. Rinse
thoroughly with warm water.
Wash slate with detergent or soap, using a mild
abrasive if necessary. Rinse and wipe dry. For added
beauty, rub dry slate with a soft cloth dipped in lemon
oil furniture polish. Using a fresh cloth, wipe off
excess oil and buff the stone. This makes stone uniformly
dark and glossy. Do not use wax on fireplaces as it is
affected by heat.
